Reduce anxiety levels
According to research, regular exercise can reduce anxiety levels. Chances are, you or someone you know may be suffering from anxiety. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans over the age of 18 have reported suffering from a chronic anxiety disorder (Ratey, 2019). It is important to understand how and why exercise can alleviate these symptoms.
How does exercise help with anxiety?
Studies show that exercise can alleviate symptoms of anxiety such as fatigue, anger, tension, and enhance concentration and cognitive function (Star, 2019).
How exercise promotes positive well being
-
Exercise decreases stress hormone (cortisol) and increases endorphins (happy chemicals) which gives your body a natural boost.
-
Physical activity distracts your mind from negative thoughts and feelings and may be a helpful way to redirect your brain.
-
Exercise increases confidence. Exercise can help you loose weight and feel healthier, which may boost your confidence and improve your mental state.
-
Exercise may be a good source of social support. Many physical activities can be social, allowing you to forget about your negative thoughts and enjoy yourself!

A study showed that a ten-week physical fitness program was effective at reducing anxiety levels. The study took two groups of 20 female university students. There was one control group that did not participate in a physical fitness program, while the experimental group did. The group that was participating in the physical fitness program did one aerobic and two dance classes per week for the ten week period. The physical activity was performed at 60-80% effort. The other group did not participate in a program for the duration of the ten weeks. The State-Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI) and Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) were given to participants before, in the middle, and after the ten week treatment. The group that was participating in the programs performed better on both.
